Hair loss and baldness used to be considered as a problem for men only. It wasn't until recent years when there are more acknowledgement in mainstream media that women can also suffer from hair loss. As a matter of fact, almost all women experience some kind of hair loss or thinning hair by the time they reach 50.

Hair loss is many times more devastating for women than for men because the public is typically conditioned to believe that women is usually immune to hair loss. Also, while it is commonly acceptable for men to go bald, such is not the case for women. There is a certain stereotype that the bald look is not one of women's domains. Hormonal issue is usually a huge factor but so are environmental factors such as excessive chemical use as a result of hair coloring products, perms, relaxers etc.

As of the time when this is published, the only hair growth product available for women is Rogaine 2%. However, not every person responds to the treatment and the results are not very consistent.

Right now the most effective treatment for most types of women hair loss is hair transplantation. Back about 5 to 10 years ago the medical community generally believed that hair transplant is not particularly suited for women with hair loss or thinning hair. One of the main reasons is because women tend to exhibit a different pattern of hair loss than men. For women, androgenetic alopecia or female pattern baldness is typically in the form of diffuse thinning whereas for male pattern baldness the areas of thinning are usually very clearly defined.

The hair transplant industry back then believed that it is transplanting grafts in-between diffuse thinning can be difficult and may destroy existing hair follicles during the process.

However, all this changed with the advance of FUE and newly developed micro instruments such as ultra fine 0.75mm needle when transplanting donor grafts to the recipient site. Also helpful is the adoption of high magnification microscope during the transplantation process.
