Platelet rich plasma is a non invasive hair restoration treatment using the patient's own blood as growth factors. The following information is provided by Dr. Sajal Halder's clinic.

Essential factors in Platelet Rich Plasma:

Factors helpful in hair growth includes:

The Treatment:

• The blood sample is withdrawn from the patient's arm by syringe.

• The tubes containing withdrawn blood are placed in a centrifuge and spun for a period of time

• The blood is specially prepared by spinning down the blood cells to a high concentration.

• After centrifugation, the red and white and platelets settles down at various levels in the tube.

• Blood plasma that is rich in platelets is drawn off from the appropriate level.

• Plasma defined as platelet-rich plasma contains 4 to 8 times the number of platelets per cubic centimetre found in normal plasma. With additional preparation the PRP is ready for application.

• Under a tropical anaesthesia, the PRP is injected into the scalp at the sub dermal level.

Treatment Frequency for Plasma Rich Plasma:

3-4 sessions (each session with a gap of 6-8weeks) is given at the time of presentation and it needs to be repeated every year to keep the progress going.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma used for?

• To preserve and enhance hair follicle viability during and after hair transplantation

• To promote and enhance tissue repair and healing after hair transplantation.

• PRP seems to work better in patients with diffuse hair thinning caused by any causes including alopecia androgenetica.

• It is hypothesized that platelet growth factors can "wake up" dormant hair follicles and begin the production of new hair.

• It is found to be effective in alopecia Areata.

• It is not that much effective in patients with complete baldness and scarring alopecia.

• It can be used in conjunction with Minoxidil, Finasteride & hair restoration surgery.

Safety, Complications, Contraindication:

PRP is immunologically neutral and poses no danger of allergic, hypersensitivity or foreign body reactions. Sterile technique must be used at every stage of PRP preparation and application. A brief period of inflammation at the injected site may be experienced after PRP application.
